More creative therapy, much needed...

I've been back at work for two month now, and unfortunately not much has changed. I'm living on adrenaline and hope, but this Friday I'm in desperate need of some quilty therapy...

Here is what keeps me sane:

My colourful hexies.

 I started these a few weeks ago. There is no fixed plan, I just enjoy picking colours, glue basting and piecing by hand. It's a slow, meditative proces. It calms me down, makes the palpitations go away, brings me joy.

A mother-daughter project.

Marieke embroidered the center panel, we picked the fabrics together and I pieced and quilted a cushion cover for her. She is very proud to have in her "room". (she shares with her brothers, but has a corner with her own shelves, little desk and even a beanbag. She is very happy with it.

A Sew Along

I found another sew along to join. I'm still hand quilting my Splendid Sampler, slowly but surely, so I'm not taking on any big project right now. I have sewn a lot of clothes in the past months, but I didn't feel like blogging them. Maybe I'll do a post with all of them at once soon, just to catalogue them for myself. I love looking through my old posts, they are like a scrapbook of my creative products. The days are getting shorter though, and getting good light for photographs is hard, so maybe I won't blog them at all, just enjoy wearing them, or seeing them being worn by others in real life!

Anyway, I think I'll be joining the little happy sew along for an advent calendar at Pretty Fabrics and Trims. I am not buying one of their lovely kits, because I have too many fabric in my cupboard already, so I curated my own kit. Almost all the fabrics are from their shop, though. I bought them this spring, as a birthday gift to myself. I took a looooong time picking these, but I'm happy with the result. It feels christmassy to me, but the yellow and purple make it more fun. As you can see I haven't decided on the buttons yet. I was too lazy to get the button tin from my basement yesterday. I really should find a better place for my buttons and trims, but for now they live in the basement. I might buy just a little piece of finer linen, because the one in the picture is very coarse. But then, I've been very busy at work, with no time to spare to do a little bit of midday shopping, so I might just make do with what I have, and feel proud of myself for being so frugal!

As I look at my "final" selection, I'm reconsidering the green fabric. Should I have another pink or purple instead? But then the green ribbons have to go, and I don't have a lot of purple or pink ribbons, I think. Maybe I'll dig up my trims again, too... . I'm looking forward to seeing the calendars others make, too.

Easter Basket

It's almost spring!

 When I saw the tutorial for a basket tote Caroline at Sew Can She made in February, I immediately decided I would make an Easter basket from the pattern. I really like the shape of this tote, and the construction seemed pretty straight forward.

I went all out, making an embroidered center panel, and hand pieced side panels. I printed the pattern slightly smaller than the original, simply because I was too lazy to figure out how to print the pieces at 100%. So I simply did "fit to page" and went from there. I did have to trim some of my side panels tops off to make the thing fit, but the shape came out just fine in the end. My basket is 8 inches high in the middle.

For the embroidered panel I chose a pattern from doe-c-doe. I purposely chose something cute and fit for spring, but not something that screams Easter, like bunnies or Easter eggs. That way the basket is not too seasonal, just all year round cute. I used stem stitch on all the lines, with a variegated thread in light blue for the kitten.

For the side panels I English paper pieced a bunch of 1" hexies in a pleasing combination of fabrics. I actually used leftovers from my Splendid Sampler Quilt (see previous posts). I'm glad to say that even after a year of sewing with these fabrics I still haven't tired of them.

Thanks to the Splendid Sampler I found out I really like EPP.

I did simple straight line quilting (no walking foot).

I think the colors are lovely and give a positive spring feeling!

All panels were then stiffened using a layer of fusible batting first, then machine quilting and then adding some stiff fusible stuff that I don't know the name of. It's something fibrous but not woven. I've no idea what its intended purpose is. I just picked it in the Veritas because it felt like it might do the job. And it did!

The basket is sturdy enough to stand by itself.

Joining the panels was a real struggle, but I managed in the end. I like the structure of the stiff panels, but I might try a basket with just fusible batting, and see how that works. I added a magnetic snap and I think that is the only thing I'm not 100% happy with, apart from the handles. Two things went wrong with the snap. First of all, I put it in quite low on the lining, for fear of not being able to add the bias trim because of the snap getting in the way. So it distorts the shape of the basket a little when closed. Also because I didn't manage to line them up perfectly, which probably goes back to not working to scale and being sloppy with the seam allowances... . Secondly, the snap is really strong. You have to pull quite hard to open it. But it's only attached to the lining, and the lining is only attached to the bag at the top, with the bias binding. So when I tried to open it, it felt like I might tear the snap out of the lining. I did strengthen the lining as per instructions, so it should be fine. Or I might tear the lining out of the bag, a more likely scenario, it is just quilting cotton, I wouldn't have been surprised if after just a few minutes in the hands of my kids, they would have torn the lining. So I strengthened the whole thing by quilting right through al the layers around the snap. Now it feels sturdier.

But all in all, I'm very pleased, with the shape and the colors

 Making the handles was not hard, with the tutorial provided. I made my fabric strips a bit wider and added a cotton core in the handle. I am pleased with the result. I'm not so pleased with the messy top stitching with which they are attached. That was the result of the stiffness of the bag, and the fact that it is smaller than the pattern. Next time, I'll try attaching the handles before constructing the bag. The reason I didn't do that this time is that 1. I followed instructions on this point and 2. I thought it would be better to decide the position of the handles once the bag was constructed.

I just tell myself the cuteness of the kitty distracts from the messy top stitching :-).

All in all I'm very pleased with my project, it makes a nice addition to my Easter decor.

The Splendid Sampler™ 7 - Snug as a Bug

I had so much fun making this Splendid Sampler™ block, and I adore the end result. I don't do embroidery often, so I'm quite pleased with the technical execution as well: it's not bad, even though I say so myself! Even thought the original plan was to keep it simple (just a line drawing and one bit of applique, for the blanket), I ended up filling in the faces and doing quite bit of embellishing, Barri Sue Gaudet style. Years ago I made a little 'welcome home' pillow from a book of hers, which had the same flowers in the corners. I love how simple, yet elegant this little decorative details are.

Illustration Friday - Spark : will you swap with me?

I made this piece for the Illustration Friday topic of the week: spark. I decided to combine my love for drawing and sewing for the first time, and had a lot of fun with it. This is the final result:

Spark (25 x 18 cm, 10 x 7and1/2 inches)

Our new wood stove was my source of inspiration. It has sparks in it, literally, but it also adds a spark to our renovated living room. My husband pointed out that the floor and wall patterns look more like our old floor and wall paper. Maybe I'm secretly missing the comfort of my old living room.

I started with a simple sketch and then made of free form collage with scraps of fabric and machine embroidery, based on that.

Because I liked making this piece, but have no idea what to do with it now, I came up with a fun idea... here it comes. If you like this piece and would like to have it sent to you, you can leave a comment below telling me why you like it and what you'll swap it for. The illustration is 10 by 7 and 1/2 inches (25cm by 18cm), but I will cut the background fabric to 12 by 8 and 1/2 (30cm by 21cm), so you can do anything with it: frame it, incorporate it in a quilt or cushion, or whatever you like. It's machine washable, but quite stiff because of all the layers of fabric and embroidery. I'm interested in your illustration, or some fabric scraps. If you can add a link to your offer, I can pick (if anyone is interested that is) my favorite. We then exchange snail mail addresses via mail and send our packets.

Tutorial duffel-zak - deel 2 - buitenzijde patroondelen knippen en borduurwerk

 Zo, tijd voor deel 2, alle stukken van de buitenkant van mijn tas klaarmaken. Ik heb besloten een borduurseltje toe te voegen op de voorzak van mijn tas. Dat maakt het nog iets persoonlijker, en ik vind ruw linnen in combinatie met fris katoen gewoon heel mooi. Het prentje komt van Birdie Brown. Ze verkoopt illustraties voor scrapbooking en andere knutselwerkjes in haar Etsy winkel, maar deze was gratis.

Ik begon met het knippen van alle patroondelen in vlieseline, zonder naadtoeslag. Vbno en vlnr: de voorkant, de zijkant, de stukken voor naast de rits en de zijzak. De vlieseline is rechts in beeld gevouwen, zodat alles dubbel geknipt wordt, behalve de ristdelen, die liggen tot tegen de vouw en worden dus dubbel zo lang als hun patroondeel (daarom maakte ik ook 2 identieke patroondelen).

Alle delen geknipt, zonder naadtoeslag!

Op één van de voorkanten tekende ik af waar mijn geborduurd middenpaneel zou komen...

... en ik knipte die voorkant in 3 delen, 2 zijpanelen en 1 middenpaneel.

Dan worden alle vlieseline-delen op de stof gestreken, voldoende stof rondom om bij het knippen een naadtoeslag te laten (bij de ritsdelen zit aan de ritskant geen naadtoeslag!)

Voilà, alle delen met vlieseline bestreken en uitgeknipt. De zijzakken heb ik bovenaan gevouwen en dus dubbel geknipt, zo hoef ik ze niet apart te voeren.

Voor de voorzak knipte ik de zakzelf (even breed als het middenpaneel van linnen) en een stuk voering-stof dat even breed is, maar 2 cm langer, zodat het ook een biesje kan vormen.

Bovenzijde spelden en stikken...

... en hetzelfde voor de onderzijde.

En dan zo strijken dat er bovenaan een biesje is, en dat onderaan de voering er niet uitpiept.

 Zo, dat ging vlot. De rits daarentegen was een ander paar mouwen, maar dat ik voor deel 3.

Tutorial duffel-zak - deel 1 - voering: patroondelen uitknippen, binnenzak inzetten, label borduren. (en de hengsels knippen)

Ik heb voor mijn verjaardag weer een bon gekregen van Amazon van Lillie. Ik heb er onder andere een boek over zakken maken mee gekocht.

Mijn nieuw boek. Hoewel de modellen (nu) niet zijn wat ik zocht, staan er wel een aantal technieken mooi in uitgelegd, en die ga ik gebruiken voor mijn eigen zak-ontwerp.

Ik wil voor de kinderen logeertassen maken. Met het vierde in aantocht hebben we wel een grotere auto gekocht, maar als we er met z'n zessen in zullen zitten, zal er toch weinig bagage-ruimte zijn. Nu steken we de logeerspullen van de kinderen in plastic vouwbakken, maar stoffen tassen zullen minder ruimte innemen. Die kunnen we zelfs aan de kinderen hun voeten zetten, bijvoorbeeld. Natuurlijk was er geen enkel patroon in het boek dat was wat ik zocht, en ook op het internet vond ik niets wat juist goed was, dus ben ik zelf aan de slag gegaan. Ik besloot een kleiner formaat 'proef-tas' te maken, alvorens de stofjes van de kinderen te verknippen. Ik zou natuurlijk een lelijk, gratis stofje kunnen nemen, maar besloot het FQ-pack dat ik voor mezelf als extraatje bij de bestelling voor de kinderen voegde te gebruiken. Zo vermijd ik ook dat de stofjes blijven liggen omdat ik ze te mooi vind om in te knippen, tot ik ze uiteindelijk niet meer mooi vind, en dus ook niet de moeite waard van iets mee te maken, snap je?

Ik ben begonnen met de patroondelen voor de voering uit te knippen.

Alle stukken kunnen uit 1/2 yard geraken. Ik heb ze hier op een 1/2 yard open gelegd om het te bewijzen. Die stof ga ik dus gebruiken voor een tas voor Lucas. Van links naar rechts: de onderkant/voorkant langs 2 zijden in één keer geknipt (als het patroon een richting heeft, moet je twee helften knippen en een naad midden onder, anders staat het patroon aan één kant van je tas ondersteboven, natuurlijk), de 2 stukken voor de binnenzak, de 2 stroken voor het bovenstuk met rits, en de twee zijstukken.

Dit is de techniek die ik eerst ga proberen: de 'flush zip pocket'. Omdat mijn zak vrij klein is, heb ik de minimum afstanden tot de rand van de zak en zo toch een beetje vrij geïnterpreteerd. Ze staan op het patroon aangegeven, en het is zo gelukt de zak erin te krijgen. Een beetje meer bewegingsruimte werkt natuurlijk wel makkelijker, denk ik.

Hier heb ik een 'zakdeel' op de binnenvoering gespeld, met de goede kanten tegen elkaar, en heb ik met de verdwijnende stift aangeduid waar ik moet stikken (rondom de rechthoek) en knippen ('enveloppe-vormige' kniplijnen in de rechthoek).

Gestikt, geknipt, en dan nu keren. Zo begin je...

... en zo gaat het verder ...

... en dan kan je het zo platstrijken. Niet slecht voor een eerste probeersel.

Op dit moment besloot ik een persoonlijk etiket toe te voegen. Het is niet omdat het een probeersel is, dat het niet mooi mag zijn, niet. Of dat het niet véél werk mag vragen, zodat de ontgoocheling als het dan misgaat niet nog groter is, omwille van al het werk dat gekropen is in die kleine, absoluut niet noodzakelijke extraatjes.

En het label op de voering. De flap van de binnenzak omhoog, die mag niet mee vastgestikt worden!

De rits op zijn plaats gespeld ...

... en vastgestikt (misschien een beetje te veel spanning op het garen, of op de voet, waardoor de kleine 'fronseltjes'?)

Ja, ze gaat nog open en dicht!

BONUS: ik heb al 3 stroken van 8 cm breed geknipt, evenwijdig aan de zelfkant van deze FQ. Die zullen dienen voor de korte hengsels.

Ai, ai, ai, ik ben vanavond zo onverstandig geweest om verder te werken aan mijn duffelzak, nadat Willem naar de badminton vertrokken was. Ik heb de rits ingezet, in het bovenstuk, ai, ai, ai...

Maar voordat ik daar in meer detail op inga, moet ik nog het knippen van de buitenstof op deze blog zetten, dat ging wel goed...
