Pasen komt eraan ...

The Splendid Sampler™ 5 - Simple Simon

I completed the fifth block of The Splendid Sampler™. As the name suggests, it is quite simple, just an adapted nine patch. But it's simple and striking, as a good quilt block should be.

Simple Simon

I love the details in the Birds and Berries fabric: a little snail, ...

... a cob web, ...

... a flying bird, ...

... and a perched bird!

The Splendid Sampler™ 4 - Happy Happy

I'm still not 100%, but I'm well enough to do some sewing, yay! I tackled the fourth block of The Splendid Sampler™ in the last few days. I learned how to make perfect circles for applique! I just make templates out of cereal box cardboard though. I don't have starch so I just gather around the template and tie off, then give it a good press with dry heat. I don't have an iron with steam function either, but it's on my birthday wish list, plus I'd be afraid of the printing inks spoiling my fabric if I used moisture. Finally I crunch up the cardboard template to take it out. The template is effectively destroyed by doing this, but it's just a piece of cereal box anyway, so that's okay. I did put some white interfacing on all my pieces because I'm appliqueing light pieces to a darker background, and didn't want the background fabric to shine through.

Happy Happy!

Not yet trimmed to size, but room to spare

The block reminds me of a Wassily Kandinsky tree, like the one my son drew.

Our art gallery wall, in our dining area, which doubles as a mudroom (still under construction) and a sewing room (the white box is the left hand corner is my sewing machine).

The Splendid Sampler™ 3 - Lots of Love

I finished block three of The Splendid Sampler™. It came out beautifully, and at the right size from the first time! I made one large and four small hearts, for my husband and I, and our four kids. They were born in four different seasons, and I chose fabric to reflect this. Pieter was born in spring and got the light green fabric, Marieke got blue with red birds for winter, Lucas got plum for fall and Felix got bright yellow for summer.

Finished block

Correct size!

I'm starting to wonder about my fabrics, though. I have 3 pretty blocks, but I'm not sure if they'll work together. I have a fabric selection of sunny yellows, lime and bright green, hot pink, soft blue and finally the plum for something darker. I'm wondering if the bright green background of my first block won't be too much? Maybe I should use white as background consistently and limit the colors to two or three per block?

The Splendid Sampler™ 2- Wings - Try Three

Today I seem to be feeling just slightly better. My head is still pounding and my ears ringing, but I am managing to control the worse of the muscle and joint aches and the fever with a regular dose of ibuprofen. So I did something to make me feel a little better still: I did some sewing!

Wings! I'm not sure if I'll add the embroidery.

And I'm pleased to announce that I finished the second block of The Splendid Sampler™! I simplified it just a little bit, and measured every step, and went real slow, and I ended with a block of exactly 6 1/2 " square!

6 1/2 inch!

I also got started on block three. I'll be making one large heart for me and my husband (who is also down with the flu!), and one for each of our 4 children (who have been spared until now, touch wood). They were each born in a different season, so I tried to get their fabric to match their season. I've already done a spring heart for Pieter, and a winter heart for Marie.

The first three hearts of 'Lots of Love' are done and are all measuring in correctly!

The Splendid Sampler™ 2- Wings - Try Two

So I tried to correct the two problems with my previous Splendid Sampler™ block. I think the color scheme is wonderful! Love it! It's perfect, except ... I made it too big!!! I guess this time round I made the seam allowance, way too scant a 1/4 inch, and my lock finished at 7" square! Really? Really! I guess accuracy is what I will be aiming for next time... if there ever is one :-). Maybe I should stop trying to sew something this accurate when I'm down with a bad cold. The aches and pains are making it difficult to focus, and sometimes I hurry trying to get something done, so I can take another nap. I hope I sleep well tonight, and then maybe tomorrow I muster the courage to give it one final try ... and get it right!

I really like the color scheme.
That's 7 inch square!

First Cat Pencil Case, For Felix.

I bought this cut and sew panel from Woodmouse & Bobbit at Spoonflower. in fact I bought the four different kitties, one for each of my kids. I made this one first. Felix loves it, even though he's too small to need a pencil case for anything.

Front.

Back!

Pretty lining!
Mmmmmarkers!

Eat'm up!

Mmmm, tummy full!
