I've been super active sewing lately, but it seems there are always more WIPs than finished projects...

I've been on a bit of a creative high lately. I'm super-inspired AND I have a lot of energy, so I'm getting things done!

Lucas' swimming bag.

For the start of the school year everyone needs bags, lots and lots of bags. I'm not over-ambitious, so we bought the school bags from the store.

Pieter is simply using the same bag we bought 2 years ago, when he started primary school. But the need for PE bags, and ballet and karate and swimming bags gave me a good excuse to buy some pretty novelty fabric and get sewing.

So I went by my favorite fabric stores in Leuven last week.

We used to have just two left: Pauli and Het Wolwinkeltje, but because sewing and knitting is hot again, new stores are popping up all over the place. They all have their own vibe, so I like to scout them all. They might see each other as rivals, but I think it's nice to have the different vibes.

Pauli carries only fabric, lots of it, in all qualities and price ranges. There are always a few fabrics I like, and when there is a coupon I like, I buy it, to have some stock for improvised, guilt-free little projects.

Het Wolwinkeltje has everything for traditional patchwork and quilt, including batting by the yard and good quality sewing thread. They are also the only store I know to carry such a large collection of good quality knitting yarn.

Habiba is the place to be for funky novelty fabrics, and a small but high quality collection of haberdashery.

I buy my piping there, even though it's twice as expensive as in Veritas. It's simply more beautiful. It's more tightly woven and the cord is white, whereas in the Veritas piping the dark cord shines through the loose weave of the biais ribbon. I want piping to give my work a fine finish, and if the product itself screams 'cheap', I don't see that happening.

I'm not a frequent shopper at Studio Adjectif yet. It's a bit out of the center, although very close to my work.

It's like I'm dreaming...

I generally like the small selection of ecological fabric, but the prices are quite high. It's a very small store, so I can't browse like I can in the other stores. I'm almost always the only customer, so I tend to feel a bit watched. That being said I do like the feel of the store, and I bought the very pretty robot fabric for Lucas' swimming bag there.

Veritas is the large chain store, where I go for eyelets, some buttons, zippers, sewing needles and other basic sewing necessities.

Afdragertje voor Ludwina

Marieke haar rokje viel echt niet meer te redden: meer gat dan rok eigenlijk. Maar ze kon er geen afscheid van nemen, dus .... maakten we samen een kleedje voor Ludwina. De flodder-mouwtjes zijn een idee van Marie, ze zijn gemaakt van de stukjes stof die overbleven door de armsgaten uit te knippen.

Ludwina haar kleedje heeft ook gaatjes, want ik vond geen enkel stuk stof groot genoeg om een kleedje zonder gaatjes te kunnen knippen ... en vorige week had Marieke dat rokje nog aan...

Design team

My eldest son Pieter and I have co-designed before to enter a Spoonflower contest.

Pieter's Reflections.

We made a boats fabric then, with a limited color palette.I really enjoyed the process of the design. After getting out markers in roughly the color's specified in the contest rules, we set about making sketches of anything hat sprung into our mind around the topic 'sailing'. We tried all kinds of boats, sails and waves. Then I photographed the design we chose, uploaded it onto Spoonflower and reduced and reset the colors to the specifications. Finally we used good old Paint (I haven't a clue how to use any illustration software) to make a repeat pattern we liked.

Now the theme is "Cosmic Voyage" and we pimped up an old Spoonflower design to enter in the contest.

I didn't like the grid pattern in the first version of the fabric. But since I don't know how to get the scribbly background right with the half drop configuration (I can only manage a basic repeat on Paint), I worked around my lack of computer skills by only having scribbles around the picture and putting stars on a flat background beyond that.

Homeward bound block finished

I finished the homeward bound block for my mother. She uses a set of mini quilts I made to keep the bottoms of her stacked frying pans from scratching the surface of the pans underneath it.

It may seems silly to use something which was so much work and which is so pretty, for such a mundane and low profile job. However, I think it's very important to surround oneself with beauty, not to boast or show off to other people, but simply of the pleasure finding beauty in everyday things, like getting a frying pan from the cupboard.

I once read an article about Chinese inlay soles. From what I remember the Chinese decorate their inlay soles for the traditional footwear, with intricate embroidery. No one sees these works of art, they are meant solely for the wearer. I think this kind of beauty should be cherished in our lives.

 I should really take some pictures of the finished set (now living at my parents house), and of my set of "frying-pan-mini-quilts".

Duffelzak voor Pieter

Deze tas is al even af, Pieter gebruikte hem al in de kerstvakantie. Ik zet hem nu op deze blog, om mij een beetje te motiveren nu ik begonnen ben aan de tas voor Lucas.

De hele tas, er zitten twee hoofdkussens in, dus ruimte genoeg voor kleren voor een paar dagen.

Net als Marieke's tas, heb ik aan de beide uiteinden een rimpelzakje gemaakt.

De hengsel zijn versierd en verstevigd met het oranje Busy Town stofje.

Pieter heeft de Druktestad stofjes zelf gekozen en is heel blij met zijn super-persoonlijke tas. Deze tas in elkaar zetten ging heel vlot, met die van Marieke nog in de vingers.

Kerst-ontbijt-pakketten

Naar goede gewoonte heb ik ook dit jaar mijn kerstgeschenken zelf gemaakt. We doen niet aan grote cadeau's bij ons in de familie, maar geschenkjes uitwisselen is wel leuk. Vaak geven we elkaar iets lekkers, of iets zelfgemaakt. Dit jaar krijgen de (schoon)broers en (schoon)zussen dus iets lekkers dat zelfgemaakt is.

De twee volledige pakketten voor mijn broers en hun echtgenotes.

De kerstontbijt-pakketten bestaan uit een kaarsje in een houdertje met een zelfgehaakt jasje (gezellig), rode kerstthee (warm), mix voor scones met veenbessen (zoet) en zelfgemaakt lemon-curd (lekker). Zo maken we dus een lekker, warm, zoet en gezellig ontbijt!

Het is geen duur geschenk, de potten had ik allemaal in huis, het garen voor de houdertjes komt van de kringloopwinkel en de ingrediënten voor de scones en lemon curd zijn ook niet duur.

Rode kerst-thee in een mini-weckpotje.

Er ging wel wat tijd in steken. Ik heb de labels allemaal zelf ontworpen (in Paint, natuurlijk), en de cadeau-zakken zijn ook zelfgemaakt, uit de grote papieren zak van AS Adventure waarin onze Pieter zijn nieuwe winterjas (ook rood) zat. Die is hij afgelopen zaterdag in Leuven gaan kopen met oma Lena, zijn meter.

De gehaakte jasje voor de thee-lichtjes haakte ik volgens dit patroon. Op die site zie je ook een foto van zo'n theelichtje 'in actie'.

De lemon curd was nog het meeste werk. Ik maakte hem volgens een recept uit een boekje dat ik van tante Tina kreeg voor de geboorte van Felix. Het is niet moeilijk, maar het duurt lang, en je moet heel lang roeren! Dus ik hoop maar dat de ontvanger het lekker vinden.

Zoete rood-witte hartjes: mmmm...

De veenbessen-scones zijn een aangepast recept van op de site van Albert Hein. Daar ga ik vaak kijken als ik een recept zoek voor iets specifiek, of als ik bijvoorbeeld een vegetarisch gerecht zoek met groenten van het voedselteam dan vind ik daar meestal wel iets eenvoudig en lekker.

Zoet, gezellig, warm. In de zoete pot zie je de lagen suiker, veenbessen en bloem.

Alles bij elkaar vind ik het toch een leuk geschenk, dat ik zelf ook wel zou willen krijgen.

Een beetje uitleg bij de inhoud: hoe moet je de scones bereiden, en hoe de lemon-curd bewaren?

Update: de eerste pakketten zijn gisteren uitgedeeld, en de ontvangers waren er blij mee. Er blijft er nog één over voor morgenavond.

De stofjes op de zoete potten waren de inspiratie voor het rood-witte hartjes thema.

Doordat we het kerstfeest bij mijn ouders al op de zondag voor Kerst vieren, wordt het allemaal wat gebroken, hebben we tijd om uit te rusten (en te verteren) voor we naar een volgend feest moeten en dat is wel zo leuk. Het was een heel gezellig feest gisteren, hopelijk wordt het morgenavond bij mijn schoonouders ook fijn. Nu ga ik proberen nog de duffelzak van Marieke af te werken en misschien zelfs één voor Pieter in elkaar te steken, zodat de twee oudsten al hun logeertas hebben voor morgen, want zij blijven nog 3 nachtjes langer dan wij.

Uit de oude doos - Piraten-rugzak

Deze zak maakte ik toen Pieter in het tweede kleuterklasje zat, dus al twee en een half jaar geleden.

De tekening is een zo getrouw mogelijke kopie van Pieter zijn piraten-tekening, die hij in de klas maakte. Hij is dan ook heel trots op zijn unieke zwemzak.

  De trekkoorden haken aan de hoeken van de zak om een rugzakje te vormen.

Sinds ik de 505 tijdelijke lijm voor stof ontdekte, is appliqueren zo veel gemakkelijker geworden. Ik verstevig de stofjes met opstrijkbare vlieseline, teken de vorm erop en knip ze uit. Daarna plak ik ze op de achtergrond met de spray en stik ik ze met een zig-zag op hun plaats.

Zoals je ziet zit alles nog op z'n plaats en dat na al meer dan twee jaar intensief gebruik als zwemzak!

My Etsy Shop is Making Me Feel Like a Loser...

I opened my Etsy shop and already have a few nice things in there. Well, I think they're nice. But no one is looking, at my shop or my listings. Why can't they see how great these things are?

You have to admit this rack is gorgeous, don't you?

And just look at those details, the craftsmanship! And I can customize it: (almost) any size, (almost) any color!

And practical, too, look, just look, and please, please tell me my rack is wonderful, no, tell me I'm wonderful, no, not wonderful, the best!

I made a peg bag, too. With lovely vintage fabrics and rough linen. I really like the texture.

I can't even say they're not buying because they don't like them, or because they're too expensive, because they are not even bothering to take a closer look... And even though I don't like to admit it, it makes me feel like a loser, in a sense. I love the stuff I make, and I feel the whole world should love it, too, and people should be falling over each other just to be allowed to be the next one I make a beautiful laundry rack for!

Doesn't it look nice? And practical? And lovely? Love me, love me, love me!

And it's even more flashy when you reverse it!

I know, I know, I'm being terribly self-centered. I know the world doesn't revolve around me, but maybe it SHOULD!? I was never big on any social media, like Facebook or Twitter, but now I get why people can get so hung up on them, and go to check if they have any likes like every 5 seconds. I find myself wanting to go check my Etsy dashboard first thing in the morning. When I have a view, my heart jumps. When there is (more often than not) a great big zero staring at me, I feel like a failure. By putting a (precious) piece of myself out there, I have unwillingly tied up my self worth to other people's willingness to look at my work and tell me they like it. That was never what I set out for. I didn't start this shop to earn big bucks, or to have people fall down at my feet to tell me how great my work is (well, I didn't consciously do it for that reason, but maybe it was part of the reason). I just wanted a hobby and a way to share my passion for creating beauty with like-minded people. That's why I decided to put my building plans on Etsy, rather than just the finished product.

See, DIY instructions, so you can get to work yourself!

I would love for people to get building themselves, with my plans! I would also like to make custom orders, something unique for that unique person or occasion, something people will cherish. But one week after opening day, my shop is making me feel like a loser. Maybe I should just ditch the whole idea? Anyone who reads this, feel free to leave some comment to cheer me up. But since this blog is more like a personal journal than a way to share things with the world, I don't get a lot of readers and almost no comments. And that's fine, because that way at least this blog is just fun, and it's NOT making me feel like a loser for not having any readers! ;-)

Felix looks at me as if he's trying to tell me to get a grip and realize that he is much more important than an Etsy shop's success or failure and that he'll always love me, even if I am a crazy mummy.
