Some Quick Christmas Quilting

Just for fun, and to relax a little after a stressful night, I made a little Christmas quilt ornament. I used this super easy tutorial by from A Quilting Life. I especially like the picture with all the cut fabric plus dimensions. That makes it so much easier to see what's going on than just a list in print of the cutting instructions. Anyway, that one micro quilt was so much fun, I just made another 3 today. i plan to use them as gift tags.

I love doing a little quilty project like this on my sewing machine. It's so homely and heals the soul...

Some stuff I've been making over the last few months:

We had lovely warm weather well into autumn so my dahlia and annuals kept blooming for longer than usual. It was my first year growing zinnias and I loved them. They are bright and cheerful, and they keep for over a week in a vase.

 I've been doing some more sewing with my daughter Marieke. She designed this quilt a whole while back. Maybe it's a bit too much work for a first big project, but the end result will be beautiful. The log cabins are a bit wonky, but I managed to square up the blocks and assemble the quilt top. This morning we discussed option for the borders. Maybe we'll finish it this Christmas break?

 Then I made these pillow cases. A long time ago, I made four winter pillow cases, with a nice photo print fabric and a crochet border. Some time after that I bought some autumn photo print fabric and put it in my stash... for ages! It was an impulse buy and I don't really like the fabric, so I didn't feel like sewing anything from it. Then in 2017 I bought some iron-on woodland creature, which are just so lovely and pretty, and put them in my sewing cupboard ... for ages! And this autumn I finally decided I WOULD use the ugly fabric! So I bought some solid and some really pretty fabric and made some lovely pillow cases. I actually like them, despite the ugly fabric, and the kids love their little woodland friends. I only took pictures of two pillow cases, maybe I'll get round to photographing the other two and adding them in here some day, but probably not :-).

 I made this pencil case for my daughter Marieke. She had an Hello Kitty pencil case with a broken zip. Her request was to fox the zip, but it was simpler to just dismantle the case and recuperate the fabric in a new case. I used this pattern by Caroline from Sew Can She. It is not the easiest to sew (a bit fidgety), but very easy to understand the construction (no turning or sewing inside out lining, or stuff like that). I found perfect pink for the zipper tape and a cute bow tie fabric for the lining in my stash. I used a decorative stitch to attach the zipper to the case. She loves it, so I am a happy mom. I made another for a friend of hers, but forgot to take pictures.

And finally, this is a project I finished just yesterday: a pretty Christmas pillow. It matches the advent calendar I made last year. I actually pieced it in January this year, because we needed a small pieced project to practice machine quilting on a course I took in March. It was quilted in March, and then lay waiting to be finished until last week. I had even cut the backing fabric and the binding, so it was an easy project to pick up and finish last Friday morning, when I had a free morning, happily spent machine quilting Lucas' sheep quilt and finishing the machine sewing on this pillow case. I finished hand sewing the binding yesterday morning. I' m very pleased with how it turned out.

 And this is the fabric I picked for my next project. My mum has asked me to make throws for her scruffy sofa's, and I think these colours will look nice. I'm not sure I have enough fabric, however. I'm thinking I'll just start making flying geese blocks and see how big a quilt I can make. I like this colour combination, too, so if it's too small, it can be a throw, and I have to buy more fabric for my mum's quilts.

Another Fox

I made my sixth fox from the pattern by Little Cotton Rabbits. I'm very happy with the result. It was the first time I tried the stockings and the shoes, and they turned out quite nicely. I made my little fox a wardrobe of 2 dresses and a little pink cardigan. I keep thinking I will make a little fox for myself one day, and make her a wardrobe for every season, but I think this one will go to my goddaughter.

In her undies! I like the stockings and the shoes, even though they limit the colour pallet if you want a "matchy" outfit.

The cardigan is from the seasonal sweaters pattern, for the textured dress, I added texture to the basic dress pattern in the seasonal dresses, although I'm tempted to buy the textured dresses pattern, too, they are sooo beautiful!

I started working on another little fox, in Rowan tweed. I think it will be very pretty. I have to say that lately, I've been more in a reflective than in a creative mood. So I spend a lot of time musing. I also seem to feel that I should get certain project done, before embarking on new ones. Why I feel this way, I do not know. I do know that it makes sewing feel like work. At least, before I get started. Once I'm sitting behind my machine, it's always fun and relaxing, also when I'm working on a "have-to" project. While I'm writing this, I'm thing that I should transfer my fox knitting to my knitting bag, or a basket, so it's easy to grab when I do feel like knitting a bit.

Progress in the Meadow

I've been sewing merrily along on my sheep quilt for Lucas. Just two more sheep and I can assemble my blocks and start on the prairie points and borders.

 I'm working from a pattern in Farm Girl Vintage by Lori Holt. I love the book. It has 45 (I think) blocks, all in 6' and 12', with instructions for rotary cutting and piecing (no templates), and tons of lovely pictures of different quilts to make with them.

 It has some fancy pictorial blocks, like this sheep, but also a lot of traditional blocks and differents stars, so I'll be making quilt from this for years, no decades to come! Plus, on her blog you can find mash-ups, combining different blocks, and more patterns (for sale) to add to your collection, like a barn cat and a beehive. Lovely, lovely! Such a good birthday present! I started naming the sheep, while I was sewing, they have real character, even if they don't have eyes or legs just yet...

Draagtas van een coupon

Er is een nieuw stoffenwinkeltje in Tervuren. Ik ben er nog maar 2 keer geweest, zonder enig ander doel dan een rits kopen, maar ik ben telkens buitengekomen met een paar couponnetjes... ze hebben zó veel leuke stofjes! Ik had voor bijna allemaal meteen een idee wat ik ermee ging maken. Dat hoeft niet echt, want als ik een echt mooie coupon zie, geef ik mezelf toestemming om ze te kopen, ook al heb nog geen idee wat ik ermee ga doen. Ik weet dat ze vroeg of laat me veel naaiplezier zullen schenken. Met stof die nog op de rol zit is dat moeilijker, ik weet nooit hoeveel ik moet kopen als ik niet van tevoren weet wat ik ermee ga doen.

 Van deze mooie print op stevig canvas maakte ik binnen de week een draagtas. We gebruiken dit soort tassen voor vanalles: naar de bib gaan, inkopen doen, zwemmen, als linnenzak op de camping, ... ze zijn gewoon overal goed voor.

Dit is een gróte tas, er passen met gemak 2 quilts in.

Ik zet ze zonder patroon in elkaar: gewoon een smalle reep eraf voor de hengsels (deze heeft lange voor over de schouder, en korte, voor in de hand), eventueel een brede reep eraf voor een zij- of binnenzakje (heeft deze niet, niet genoeg stof), een zak naaien, "boxed corners" erin stikken en de hengsels eraan. Dat gaat allemaal snel, het moet niet super netjes. Ik let er wel op dat mijn zak recht op draad geknipt is, en ik gebruik een engelse naad, zodat mijn zwempak niet vol rafeldraadjes hangt.

En ik ben blij met mij mooie, grote tas. (achteraan op de grond ligt mijn schapenquilt)

Mijn man vindt de tas ook tof, hij zoekt ze altijd uit als hij een draagtas nodig heeft, en dat is wel tof, want zo kan ik mijn coupon-impuls-aankopen toch goedpraten!

Fourth of July Quilt

I finished quilting and binding my lone star quilt. It wasn't on the fourth (more like the seventh, I think), but close enough to call this blue, white and red starry quilt "Fourth of July". I always think patriotic (US) quilts are pretty, but being a Belgian, I can't really make a Belgian version.

For starters Belgian are not really into flag waving the way Americans seem to be. I'm not going to even try and explain Belgian politics (because, quite frankly, I don't understand them), but decorating my house with the flag would make me appear a royalist/monarchist. But more importantly, our flag is red, yellow and black, and I don't think I'll ever make a red/yellow/black quilt.

Looks lovely in the prairie that our backyard is, after two months of no rain (very, very rare in a Belgian summer!).

I didn't plan to make an American patriotic quilt, I just decided to cut up 6 of my husband old shirts and combine them with an old duvet cover to try this pattern I've been wanting to make for a long time, but didn't want to buy fabric for in case it ended as a big mess. I used a tutorial I found on Pinterest to help me with the cutting and piecing.

A closer look at the machine quilting and the twisted ribbon border. This is before binding and washing. One big advantage of using old fabric: no worries about the red bleeding into the white!

The seams are not well matched at all (no close-ups of unmatched seams!), but the whole thing lies flat and looks good, which is what counts. I then machine quilted it. I went a bit crazy on the diamonds of the star, trying all kind of patterns. I also started doing a dense seashell design on the red background. Then I realized that 1. this would take ages, and 2. the dense quilting makes the quilt stiff, and I wanted to keep the softness of the duvet cover, which has been washed so often it's a bit downy. So I finished with a very open spiral, which took me just a few hours. I did the binding by machine, which is messy (so no close-ups of that either!), but it's finished and I love it!

Done! Finishes at 61' (155 cm) square, ideal for a fourth of July picnic, or a lap quilt.

I really like the twisted ribbon border. I used a tutorial on YouTube for that. I chose not to have it go round the whole star because 1. I wasn't sure I'd have enough dark and light blue fabric, and 2. it saved me a lot of calculating to get the border to match up at the corners it looks really pretty that way!

I have a tall husband, great for holding quilts :-).

 Now I'm going to tackle my Splendid Sampler ... will I finish it in 2018?

Shorts op maat

Ik heb een probleem met confectie-broeken. Als ze passen rond mijn heupen (lees: billen), lobberen ze rond mijn taille. Dat is al zo sinds ik heupen kreeg. De enige periode in mijn leven dat ik passende broeken kon kopen is toen ik serieus wat overgewicht had, na het derde en vierde kind. Ondertussen ben ik er bijna in geslaagd terug op mijn normaal gewicht te komen en dan krijg ik dit:

Past op de heupen, lobbert rond de taille

 Dat zit niet zo goed, en het ziet er niet uit. Een riem helpt, maar trekt lelijk op de lussen. En dus draag ik altijd mijn top over mijn broek. Vorige zomer maakt ik voor het eerst een short voor mezelf, waarbij ik de maat van de taille 2 maten kleiner nam dan die van de heupen, en die paste als gegoten. Ik heb er heel de zomer van genoten, maar nu (bijna 10 kg later) is hij eigenlijk te groot, hij hangt op mijn heupen. Dus besloot ik weer een short te maken. Ik had nog een restje stof van een short die ik voor Willem maakte, en nog naaigaren, dus ik moest alleen een rits kopen. Het was een probeersel zonder veel investering. Ik nam mijn maten: 103 cm op de heupen, dat is 1 cm breder dan maat 40, en 3 cm kleiner dan maat 42, dus koos ik maat 40. Op de taille meet ik 75 cm, wat net halverwege maat 38 (73 cm) en maat 40 (77 cm) is in de maattabel van Knipmode. Dus koos ik toch maar maat 40, beter iets te groot dan iets te klein, was mijn redenering. Ik knipte model 8 uit de Knipmode van juni 2018, met iets langere pijpen. Ik nam de nepen in het achterpand nog wat meer in, en paste de tailleband navenant aan, en toch kreeg ik dit:

Nu heb ik het weer!

 De onderzijde van de tailleband paste goed (ik had nog een pasbeurt gedaan zondertailleband, en zoals gezegd de nepen nog extra ingenomen), maar de bovenkant lobberde. De tailleband eraf halen zo betekenen dat ik ook de rits eruit zou moeten halen, en ik was bang dat de stretchjeansstof te veel zou vervormen door al die mishandeling, en ik had geen overschot meer. Een riem trok lelijke rimpels in de band, dus dat was ook geen optie. En toen had ik een lumineus idee!

Ik maakte een riem van mijn laatste restje stof.

En spelde die op zijn plaats, waarbij ik de tailleband een beetje fronste.

Vooraanzicht. Daarboven zie je alle stof die ik nog over heb.

Zo gaat het riempje sluiten, met een drukknop (er zit niet meer genoeg garen op mijn spoel voor een knoopsgat, soms ben ik raar lui)

De riem gaat over de sluiting links in de broek.

Nog even passen...

OK, dat rimpelt nnog lelijk, maar het sluit wel aan in de taille.

En vooraan geeft die riem een leuk extra accent, naast de pas met punt.

Ik stikte de riem over het bovenste stiksel op de tailleband en ...

... dit is het eindresultaat! Niet perfect, maar toch een mooie "save", al zeg ik het zelf.

En dan een photo shoot in de tuin. Ik vind de hoge taille en die puntige pas echt tof.

Zit goed rond de billen, ruime zakken.

Efkes mijn topje goedleggen. Dat heb ik vorig jaar ook zelf gemaakt.

Ik vind wel dat dat gaat, zo met het topje in de broek.

En ik ben heel blij met mijn "save".

Nog een wandelingetje door de tuin.

Wat heb ik geleerd:
1. neem toch maar een maat kleiner in de taille dan op de heupen!
2. een creatieve reddingsactie levert soms onverwacht toffe resultaten op.
3. broeken maken voor mezelf loont de moeite (ik ga zeker nog een paar broeken voor de winter maken dit jaar).
