My eldest son Pieter and I have co-designed before to enter a Spoonflower contest.

Pieter's Reflections.

We made a boats fabric then, with a limited color palette.I really enjoyed the process of the design. After getting out markers in roughly the color's specified in the contest rules, we set about making sketches of anything hat sprung into our mind around the topic 'sailing'. We tried all kinds of boats, sails and waves. Then I photographed the design we chose, uploaded it onto Spoonflower and reduced and reset the colors to the specifications. Finally we used good old Paint (I haven't a clue how to use any illustration software) to make a repeat pattern we liked.

Now the theme is "Cosmic Voyage" and we pimped up an old Spoonflower design to enter in the contest.

I didn't like the grid pattern in the first version of the fabric. But since I don't know how to get the scribbly background right with the half drop configuration (I can only manage a basic repeat on Paint), I worked around my lack of computer skills by only having scribbles around the picture and putting stars on a flat background beyond that.

Illustration Friday - Spark : will you swap with me?

I made this piece for the Illustration Friday topic of the week: spark. I decided to combine my love for drawing and sewing for the first time, and had a lot of fun with it. This is the final result:

Spark (25 x 18 cm, 10 x 7and1/2 inches)

Our new wood stove was my source of inspiration. It has sparks in it, literally, but it also adds a spark to our renovated living room. My husband pointed out that the floor and wall patterns look more like our old floor and wall paper. Maybe I'm secretly missing the comfort of my old living room.

I started with a simple sketch and then made of free form collage with scraps of fabric and machine embroidery, based on that.

Because I liked making this piece, but have no idea what to do with it now, I came up with a fun idea... here it comes. If you like this piece and would like to have it sent to you, you can leave a comment below telling me why you like it and what you'll swap it for. The illustration is 10 by 7 and 1/2 inches (25cm by 18cm), but I will cut the background fabric to 12 by 8 and 1/2 (30cm by 21cm), so you can do anything with it: frame it, incorporate it in a quilt or cushion, or whatever you like. It's machine washable, but quite stiff because of all the layers of fabric and embroidery. I'm interested in your illustration, or some fabric scraps. If you can add a link to your offer, I can pick (if anyone is interested that is) my favorite. We then exchange snail mail addresses via mail and send our packets.

Nog eens tekenen

Ik teken heel graag, al voor zo lang ik me kan herinneren. Ik heb er ook aanleg voor, al past het niet dat van jezelf te zeggen. Toch doe ik er weinig mee. Ik teken wel regelmatig iets op het werk om dingen uit te leggen aan patiënten, maar dat zijn maar schematjes. Vorige week heb ik de kans aangegrepen om de vele eisen van het moederschap te combineren met tekenen. Ik heb samen met Marieke de uitnodigingen voor haar verjaardagsfeestje gemaakt.

Marieke wordt zes, dus ze mag zes kindjes uitnodigen.

De mooiste kaart is voor Roosje.

De piraten-kapitein is voor Sverre, die verliefd is op Marie.

Het was leuk om te doen en geeft al wat voorpret voor het eigenlijke feestje. Telkens weer denk ik dan 'Ik zou iets moeten doen met mijn talent voor tekenen.', maar ik zie niet hoe ik het op dit moment zou integreren in mijn leven. Naast werk, de zorg voor de kinderen en het huishouden, probeer ik nog wat te bewegen en klarinet te spelen, en zelfs dat is momenteel moeilijk, met de zware nachten en drukke dagen. In principe heb ik ook wat crea-tijd voorzien op maandag en hier en daar, maar er gaat momenteel ook veel tijd naar de verbouwing, wat ook logisch en nuttig is. Misschien wil ik gewoon te veel verschillende dingen, allemaal tegelijkertijd... Soms droom ik van een leven waarin mijn creatieve uitspattingen de rekeningen betalen, waarin ik rustig in mijn atelier mijn ding kan doen en me van de wereld met al die mensen niet te veel moet aantrekken. Mijn werk is op dat vlak echt vermoeiend, ik heb continu te doen met mensen, of het nu patiënten of collega's zijn. Ik voel vaak de behoefte me een tijd terug te trekken, af te schermen. Anderzijds doe ik het werk graag, voel ik dat ik me nuttig maak en vind ik het een gemakkelijke manier van een inkomen te verwerven. Ik denk dat ik gewoon mijn werk met hart en ziel moet blijven doen, maar dat ik ook van mezelf mag weten dat ik ook rust en alleen-zijn nodig heb, en dat ik dit gewoon moet inbouwen. En die alleen-zijn momenten, daarin komt dan onvermijdelijk mijn creatieve kant naar boven borrelen. Soms lijkt het ook dat de gestolen uurtjes creatieve tijd, het meest opleveren, als niet qua eindproduct, dan wel qua deugd die ik ervan ervaar. En dat is toch waar het voor mij om gaat...

Secateurs

I made a design for the gardening tools design contest at Spoonflower. I made a pen sketch of my own secateurs, took a photograph of it and got to work with Picasa, Paint and the Spoonflower-site. I'm quite pleased with the result and already made four colorways. Now I just have to order some proofs. I'm also going to order a color chart, so that I can get my colors right before printing. When I printed my 'creepy crawlies' fabric, I was disappointed that the red didn't come out bright enough, but I'm not sure what to do about it.With a fabric color chart, it should be a lot easier to get the right color code. Illustration Friday - Asleep

 Ik heb me echt geamuseerd met de opdracht van deze week: slaap. Ik heb gewoon vanuit mijn fantasie iets getekend en het daarna met veel geduld ingekleurd. Ik vond het zo goed gelukt dat ik de illustratie gebruikt heb om een poster te maken voor Theodore, het nieuwste kindje van een goede vriendin. Gewoon zijn naam en geboorte-datum erbij gezet in een eenvoudig lettertype en een mooie kleur. Er valt wel wat schaduw op de randen van het blad, waar het ging golven door de waterverf. Inspirerende artisten: Japneet Kaur en Peter Sis.

I had a really good time with the IF theme of this week: asleep. I just drew something from my imagination and colored it in with a lot of patience. I think the end result is rather nice, so I decided to use the illustration to make a poster for Theodore, a friend's youngest son. I just added his name and date of birth in a simple font and matching color. There is some shade on the edges of the illustration, because the paper became wavy from the water colors. Soaked

Vandaag heb ik mijn waterverf weer bovengehaald. Voor het eerst sinds lang heb ik zonder druk en puur voor mijn eigen plezier geschilderd! De opdrachten van 'Illustration Friday' en het feit dat ik niemand van deze blog vertel lijken mij te bevrijden van de drang om 'goed' te tekenen. Ik genoot van het ontwerpen en van het inkleuren. Ik vind grijzen in waterverf altijd zo leuk en dynamisch. Zie je hoe het rood, geel en blauw van de grijzen zich weer scheiden op het papier? Illustration Friday - Soaked

Mijn eerste tekening voor 'Illustration Friday'. En het goede voornemen minstens één tekening per week te maken. Deze is gebaseerd op Marieke, die in bad haar pas geknipte en doorweekte haren onderzoekt. En een beetje show verkoopt voor de camera, natuurlijk.
